MIME

Imagine a world without voice. How would you communicate dreams, hopes, and aspirations? How would you get what you need? Explore the power of physical expression without words! In this mime workshop students will learn the essential skills to creating their own mime characters and scenes. Individuals will be focusing on how to communicate through physical gesture, places and actions, with emphasis placed on facial expressions and how each of these elements works toward creating entertaining mime. Skills learned will include an exploration of tableau, muscle tension and tempo, gestures, expressions, and specificity of detail.

PUPPETRY

Discover the power of your voice and the creativity that can be unleashed with the use of puppets. In this highly innovative workshop, participants will explore the world of puppetry, learning how to build and manipulate them while using the power of their voices to bring their creations to life. Individuals will learn how to create and work with both hand and life-size body puppets while exploring group dynamics and story telling.

SHADOW PUPPETRY

Know your own shadow! Explore the world of shadow puppetry, focusing on how to build and manipulate shadow puppets and how to communicate stories with them. Participants will learn how to use their own bodies, cut-outs, and lighting techniques to convey stories through shadows. What is seen and unseen allows individuals to use their imaginations both in the creation and in the presentation of this unique theatrical form.

ACTING

All the world is a stage! Let's take to it! Participants of the acting workshop will learn skills in building characters, breaking down scripts and examining how to move and perform on a stage for an audience. Participants will learn how to breathe, speak on stage, position themselves most effectively, take stage directions, and focus on expression and delivery. Exercises will include improvisation, scene studies, monologues, character, body, and voice work, and how to work with a scene partner. Through the development of these skills participants will build confidence, communication, and self awareness skills.

PHYSICAL THEATRE

Your body is your home. Your body is your vehicle. Wherever you go, you are home. Participants will explore the realm of physical theatre focusing on the ways in which our bodies move. Skills learned will include the six different movements - under, over, around, through, cannon, and vibrate; table and lift work, character bodies, muscles tension, tempo, and the expression of emotion through physical action. Gestures and facial expressions will be explored and, working with music, participants will create movement pieces as chosen by them.

MASK MAKING

Throughout history the tradition of masks has revealed aspects of culture and self. Learn how to make your own and put it to use in the theatre. Participants will craft their own masks using a variety of materials including: paper-maché, cardboard construction, and paint. Individuals will discover how to create characters and tell stories using their mask while exploring their cultural and individual significance through dramatic expression.

BODY MAPPING: EXERCISES IN DRAWING

Our bodies are our vehicles to reaching our dreams. This program will encourage participants to use their bodies to engage their imagination. Working in pairs, individuals will trace life-size profiles. Participants will use their tracings as a canvas to explore artistically and reflectively the ways in which their bodies will help them achieve their dreams. Participants will employ mixed media techniques, combining drawing, painting, collage, and writing to express their feelings, develop imagination and creative thinking skills.

PAPER-MACHE SCULPTURES

Bring out the sculptor in you! Our large scale paper-maché program offers a unique opportunity to discover the elements of sculpture through a collaborative group process. Working as a team, participants will design, construct, and paint large-scale structures. This highly interactive team approach encourages the development of leadership, communication, and listening skills within a fun and creative atmosphere. Participants will draft an artist's proposal, craft a paper-maché artwork, and write an artist statement. The elements of sculpture (i.e. form, texture, mass, and scale) will also be covered.

STORYTELLING

Using well-loved children's stories from around the globe, this workshop invites participants to enter into the realm of the story through dramatic and artistic exercises such as, tableau, role play, hot-seating, characterizations, and many more interactive activities. Individuals will have the opportunity to place themselves in the story dramatically exploring characters' emotions, developing empathy, compassion and critical thinking skills. Delve into literature in a way that is as exciting and fun as it is informative.

DEVELOPMENT FOR SOCIAL CHANGE
Offered to youth ages 13+

Find your voice! Share your thoughts! Be a leader! "Artists in activism" unites the creative process with social awareness. This program encourages leaders to develop awareness for social issues of direct importance to themselves and others, while nurturing their voices and communication skills. The group will select an issue to research and discuss, and create a collaborative art/performance piece surrounding the chosen topic to be shared with the local community, be it through a pamphlet, art installation, information board, or site-specific performance. This program seeks to foster youths' natural passion for examining and articulating possible solutions to social issues.

CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT: Our programs build teamwork, spontaneity, and self confidence in the safety of a fun, relaxed and supportive atmosphere.
Single Sessions introduce participants to the basic elements of theatre. These highly interactive workshops provide a strong foundation to artistic and theatrical forms which nurture self awareness, collective collaboration, and the creative spirit.
Multiple Sessions will focus on teaching and developing fine arts skills. Over the course of 3 - 6 weeks participants will immerse themselves in the creative process, strengthen their artistic skills, commit themselves to a long term project, and enjoy the benefits of seeing their work to fruition.
