Our History

TheatrePeace has its roots in a volunteer-led drama and fine arts program called Peace of Theatre. This program, created by Christina Akrong in 1996, was offered in elementary and high school Section 27 classes. Teaching peace through drama, the program also visited and worked with children and youth in residential treatment centres and pyschiatric wards. In 2002 TheatrePeace became a registered organization and its membership increased through collaborations with students in the York University Theatre Department. In 2007, we incorporated into a non-profit corporation, and are now governed by a Board of Directors.

Our Mandate

The use of fine arts, particularly drama, is an effective and fun way to teach and practice relationship skills, which are at the heart of personal success and failure, conflict and bullying, teamwork and self-esteem. Through its workshops for schools, TheatrePeace helps students address and prevent conflict (such as bullying), and promote peacemaking skills. TheatrePeace workshops also meet Ontario curriculum expectations in the fine arts, including drama, dance, and visual arts.
